Wagstaff hurls Team Blue to Game 2 win
In order to win the best four-out-of-seven 2010 Fall World Series, Team Red will have to reel off four wins in six games following Wednesday's strong pitching performance by Joe Wagstaff that led Team Blue to a 3-1 game two victory.
Wagstaff threw five innings striking out five and allowing only three hits to give Team Blue a commanding 2-0 series lead.
Blue was able to score all the runs it would need in the third inning when it plated two off of Red starter Tyler Lehman. John Jones laced a two-run single through the middle to score Zack Lee and Buddy Sosnoskie. Lee would score again in the fifth to increase the margin to 3-1.
On the day, Blue collected six hits, while Red managed only three. Lehman took the loss for Red going 4 1/3 innings. He struck out two and gave up all six Blue hits. Jarrot Hooks struck out five in the remaining 2 2/3.
“Just gotta tip the cap to Wagstaff and (Dustin) Britt for shutting down our offense," said Lehman. "Hopefully we get a quality start from (Andrew) Gallant and string some hits together in game three. Some days you lose, some days you win and some days it rains. Think about it.”
Blue coach Preston Shuey was pleased with his team’s effort. “We played well in all aspects of the game. Our pitchers only gave up a few hits all day and our hitters gave us a few big hits to keep the momentum on our side. I feel really good about being up two games in the series and think that we could get the sweep.”
Shuey stated that senior Corey Carver would get the ball in Game 3, which is set for Wednesday, Oct. 13, at a time yet to be determined.
