Patriot golfers garner Top-3 finish in Rhode Island

NEWPORT, RI - Senior Peter McGibney fired a 4-under-par 68 to lead Francis Marion University to a third-place finish at the Adams Cup of Newport golf tournament, hosted by the University of Rhode Island.

Francis Marion carded a final-round 294 team score on Tuesday, second-best among the 16-team field, to move the Patriots up two positions in the final team standings.  FMU was 11th after Monday morning's opening round (303), and tied for fifth after Monday afternoon's 292 round.

Texas A&M University easily held on for the team title with a 54-hole score of 8-under 856.  The University of Minnesota (869) finished 13 strokes back in second place, followed by Francis Marion (889), University of Southern Mississippi (891), and Furman (893).

McGibney finished tied for third in the individual standings at 1-over-par 217 (75-74-68).  He recorded 12 birdies during the tournament, tied for fourth-best among the 84-player field.

Patriot junior Christopher Couch, tied for 10th after Monday's two rounds, fell back to 24th position (225) after shooting an 81 on Tuesday.  Seniors Andrew Pitcher (76-77-74=227), Ronan O'Connor (80-74-76=230), and Keith Crowley (86-72-76=234) tied for 32nd, 42nd, and 57th positions respectively.

FMU junior Matt Jackson competed as an individual with no team affiliation and tied for 53rd place (82-77-74=233).

Bronson Burgoon of Texas A&M captured medalist honors with a 12-under 204 total.

The third-place showing was the Patriots' second Top-5 finish in three tournaments this fall.

Francis Marion's next tournament will be the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate, hosted by Georgia Southern University, in Savannah, Ga., on Oct. 6-7.
