Patriots finish third at lightning-plagued Cavalier Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Francis Marion University concluded its 2008-09 season with an impressive third-place finish at the 22nd-annual Cavalier Classic hosted by the University of Virginia, when Sunday’s final 18 holes were canceled because of lightning.

The second round was not completed due to a stoppage of play at approximately 3:30 p.m. When play was going to be able to be resumed at 5:15 p.m., it was deemed too late to complete the round with the last group (the top three schools including FMU) needing to finish 12 holes.

The final results reverted back to the round-one statistics.

Senior Peter McGibney fired an even-par 72 on Saturday to pace Francis Marion.

The Patriots shot a 294 team score to finish eight shots behind the University of South Carolina (286) and just two shots back of the second-place Cavaliers (292).

McGibney tied for 14th in the individual standings, while junior Christopher Couch tied for 21st at 73, senior Ronan O'Connor (74) tied for 28th, senior Keith Crowley (75) tied for 39th, and senior Andrew Pitcher (78) tied for 67th.

FMU junior Matt Jackson competed as an individual and tied for 84th after shooting an 81.

The Patriots finished their second season as full-fledged NCAA Division I members with a 109-51-2 record, including five Top-5 finishes in 11 events.

UNC Wilmington's Josh Brock took home medalist honors after a 5-under 67 on Saturday.
