Patriots rally for sixth-place finish at Cleveland Golf event
AIKEN, S.C. - Led by senior Keith Crowley's one-under-par 69, Francis Marion University rallied over the final 18 holes to finish sixth at the 12th-annual Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate, Tuesday afternoon (March 10).
USC Aiken, the top-ranked team in NCAA Division II, won its
second consecutive tournament as the hosts posted a 15-stroke win
at the par 70 6,617-yard Palmetto Golf Club.
Francis Marion, which occupied 12th place after the opening two
rounds on Monday, fired a 291 team score on Tuesday, the
second-lowest score of the day.
USCA posted a three-round score of 860 and led wire to wire. Liberty University finished second at 875, followed by Wofford College (879), Georgia College & State University (881), Furman University (883), FMU (885), UNC Wilmington and Winthrop University (886), College of Charleston (888), and East Carolina University (891). The field included 14 teams.
Francis Marion senior Andrew Pitcher tied for seventh place at 217 (70-72-75), while Crowley tied for 28th position (76-77-69=222). Other Patriot golfers were Peter McGibney (77-74-73=224) and Matt Jackson (77-73-74=224) tied for 35th place and Christopher Couch tied for 61st position (77-75-80=232).
Liberty's Robert Karlsson claimed individual medalist honors with a three-round score of 209 (67-73-69).
Francis Marion will play in the Linger Longer Invitational in Greensboro, Ga., on March 20, 21, and 22. The event is being hosted by Mercer University and Kennesaw State University.
