Patriots place 12th at Hummingbird Intercollegiate
SAPPHIRE, N.C. - Led by a top-10 finish from sophomore Ciaran McKenna, Francis Marion University placed 12th at the Hummingbird Intercollegiate Golf Tournament hosted by Western Carolina at the par-71, 6,767-yard Country Club of Sapphire Valley course.
FMU followed up Monday's 293 score with a final-round 289 on Tuesday to finish at 582, only two strokes out of the Top 10.
Furman University rallied on the back nine to win the team title by one stroke over first-round leader University of Kentucky and East Carolina University.
McKenna shot a 2-under 69 on Tuesday to tie for seventh place at 2-under 140.
FMU freshman Kenneth Svanum fired a 72 on Tuesday and tied for 20th position at 143. Senior Chris Couch (76-73=149) tied for 54th and senior Matt Jackson (75-75=150) tied for 64th place, while freshman Michael Asay (80-84=164) placed 102nd in his first collegiate tournament.
Furman's Garland Ferrell carded three birdies and eagled the par-5, 482-yard 14th hole for a second-straight day to shoot 4-under in the second round and 7-under for the tournament to win individual medalist honors.
The Patriots finish their fall season with a 26-49 record. FMU will open its spring schedule by hosting the Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament, Feb. 22-23, on Hilton Head Island.
