FMU stands fifth after opening day of Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC – Led by sophomore Sebastian Backlund, who is tied for the individual lead after 36 holes, Francis Marion University is fifth in the team standings after the opening day of the sixth-annual Wexford Plantation Intercollegiate Tournament.  Thirty-six holes were played on Monday at the par 72, 6,828-yard Wexford Plantation course.

The College of William & Mary leads the team standings after 36 holes with a 587 score.  Indiana University led after 18 holes, but stands two strokes back at 589 with play ending on Monday.  Davidson College is third at 593, followed by the University of Richmond (595), FMU (599), Furman University (601), USC Aiken (608) and De Paul University (608), Presbyterian College (610), Elon University (611), Samford University (613), Western Carolina University (617), University of Connecticut (623), and Ohio University (624).

The final 18 holes will be played on Tuesday beginning at 8:30 a.m.

Backlund fired rounds of 71 and 72 and is tied with Indiana’s Brant Peaper (72-71) atop the individual leader board at one-under-par 143.  Backlund’s steady opening day included 27 pars among his 36 holes.  Peaper registered eight birdies on Monday.

Sam Echikson of Davidson (73-72=145) and Zach Glassman of William & Mary (72-73=145) are tied for third position, just two shots back.

FMU sophomore Kenneth Svanum (75-72=147), who recorded seven birdies during his two rounds, is among a group of five golfers tied for fifth place.

Other Francis Marion golfers include sophomore Travis Gantt (80-74=154) tied for 41st, freshman Fredrik Sporck (76-79=155) tied for 44th, and junior Andrew Weir (84-83=167) tied for 73rd.

Michael Shrader of Richmond shot the low round of the day when he fired a 69 during the second round.
