Patriots tied for 14th after opening golf day
The Francis Marion University men's golf team is tied for 14th position after the opening day (36 holes) of the Springhill Suites Intercollegiate Tournament, hosted by the Patriots at the Country Club of South Carolina.
Georgia College & State University, led by Patrick Garrett and Billy Shida, lead the team standings by nine strokes.

The 26th-annual tournament is being played on CCSC's par 72, 7,062-yard course. The final 18 holes will be contested on Tuesday.
GCSU carded team rounds of eight-under-par 280 and six-under 282 to stand at 562. Chattanooga is in second at 571, followed by Jacksonville State University (572), Georgia Southern University (574), and Samford University (578) and Furman University (578).
Chattanooga redshirt freshman Chris Robb leads the individual standings after turning in rounds of 66 and 69 on Monday. He holds a three-stroke advantage over a group tied for second at six-under 138: Drew Aimone (Samford), Andres Schonbaum (JSU), Garrett (GCSU), Shida (GCSU), and Gonzalo Berlin (JSU).
Francis Marion fired rounds of 299 and 294 on the opening day. Sophomore Sebastian Backlund leads the Patriots as he stands tied for 21st place at 75-70=145. Junior Kurt Slattery is tied for 42nd at 77-72=149, while sophomore Kenneth Svanum is tied for 51st (76-74=150), freshman Sean Morrison is tied for 57th (74-78=152), and sophomore Travis Gantt is tied for 67th (74-80=154).
Two FMU golfers competed as individuals: freshman Fredrik Sporck in 73rd place (81-76=157) and junior Andrew Weir in 76th position (82-77=159).
Both Slattery and Weir were among seven golfers to card eagles on the opening day.
Robb’s opening round 66 and Lewis Gruber’s (Georgia Southern) second-round 66 were the two low scores on Monday.
