On Jan. 26, 2012, Francis Marion University athletic officials announced the hiring of John Campbell of Carleton Place, Ottawa, Canada, as head coach for men’s soccer. Campbell becomes the seventh head coach in the 37-year history of the FMU men’s soccer program.
Campbell comes to Francis Marion from Dominican College in Orangeburg, N.Y., where he posted an 86-27-20 record in seven seasons and earned four invitations to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. His squads captured three Central Athletic Collegiate Conference (CACC) regular-season crowns and three conference tournament titles.
This past season (fall 2011), Campbell directed Dominican to a 9-6-3 record, while three of his players earned conference All-Academic Team accolades.
Six times in his seven seasons with the Chargers, his squads recorded double-digit win totals. In 2005, the Chargers were 18-2-0 and ended the year ranked 11th in Division II. The following year, Dominican posted a 12-4-3 mark, including a perfect 8-0 conference record, and ended the year ranked 25th nationally. His squads advanced to NCAA post-season play in 2005, 2006, 2009, and 2010.
He twice earned conference coach of the year honors and was once named the New England Region Coach of the Year. His teams produced 28 all-conference performers and 10 all-region selections.
Prior to taking over the coaching reigns at Dominican, Campbell served as an assistant coach at Bucknell University (2004) and Bloomsburg University (2003). He also spent three seasons as the women’s assistant soccer coach at Division I Binghamton University (2000-2002).
Campbell graduated from Roberts Wesleyan College with a bachelor of arts degree in psychological sciences. He helped lead the Raiders soccer team to back-to-back conference titles and NAIA National Tournament appearances as a junior and senior. He played one season at Green Mountain College – where he led the team in assists and was second in goals scored – before transferring to Robert Wesleyan.
Campbell went on to play one season for the Vermont Voltage in the Professional Development League.
He holds an NSCAA National and Advanced National Diploma.
