Wolf earns ESPN The Magazine All-District Academic Honors

Francis Marion University senior left-handed pitcher Michaela Wolf has been selected to the 2010 ESPN The Magazine® Academic All-District III (College Division) women's softball team. Wolf possesses a 3.58 grade point average as a mass communications major.

This awards program is conducted by the College Sports Information Directors of America, and District III includes Florida, Georgia, Virginia, and North and South Carolina.

Wolf, a native of Littleton, Colo., was named to the 12-player first-team All-District squad, and will now be placed on the national Academic All-American ballot.

In the academic arena, Wolf is a member of Chi Alpha Sigma national college athlete honor society, and is a two-time NFCA All-America Scholar-Athlete (with this year’s award yet to be handed out).  She was a member of the 2009 PBC All-Academic Team, has been named to the Peach Belt Conference Presidential Honor Roll three times and the FMU Swamp Fox Athletic-Academic Honor Roll four times, and earned a Division II ADA Academic Achievement Award for 2007-08.

A four-year starter on the field, she leads the Patriot pitching staff with a 20-8 record and a 2.05 earned run average.  The southpaw has compiled 26 complete games, including three shutouts, in 28 starts.  She has struck out 158 batters in 181.1 innings, while walking only 44, and opponents are batting only .248 against her.  She ranks second in the PBC in victories and sixth in strikeouts.  She has yet to commit a fielding error in 42 chances this season.

At the plate, she has a team-best .381 batting average with eight doubles, four home runs, and 34 runs batted in.   Her on-base percentage of .504 ranks second in the Peach Belt and 44th nationally. She has registered 11 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games, while fanning only 10 times in 134 plate appearances.  She is also batting .450 with two outs.

She has helped the Patriots to a 34-14 record, including an appearance in the Peach Belt Tournament championship game.  FMU is currently waiting for Monday’s announcement of the NCAA Division II National Tournament field to see if its season will continue.

Wolf hold nearly every FMU career pitching record, including most wins (90), games pitched (148), complete games (106), strikeouts (741), and innings pitched (881.2).  She is the only pitcher in school history to win 20 games in four different seasons, and she ranks third in PBC history for wins and fourth in strikeouts.

Wolf is a product of Columbine High School where she was a two-time All-Conference selection.
