Salem's goal give FMU a 1-0 exhibition win

Senior midfielder Angela Salem corralled a loose ball in the 6-yard box and scored on a short shot with 3:56 remaining to give Francis Marion University a 1-0 win over The Citadel, Tuesday afternoon (Aug. 18) in women's soccer exhibition action.

Francis Marion opens its regular season on Friday evening at Campbell University, and will host Navy on Sunday at noon.

The Patriots outshot the Bulldogs 15-3 and led 7-0 in corner kicks.

Salem's 5-yard shot came after a wild scramble near The Citadel goal.  Freshman Rebeccah Hoekstra recorded an assist on the score.

Hoekstra nearly scored in the 43rd minute, but her chip shot from the left side was headed off the goal line by Bulldog defender Shanna Couch.

Early in the second half, both squads had opportunities to break the scoreless deadlock.  The Citadel's Amy Loughran intercepted a Francis Marion pass in the defensive end, but FMU senior goalkeeper Emily Brandenburg came off her line and stuffed the shot near the top of the 18-yard box in the 52nd minute.

Five minutes, later Bulldog senior Nikki Mares found herself behind the FMU defense, but shot wide into the side of the goal netting. Francis Marion sophomore forward Amanda Hall saw her one-touch shot of a cross from the right side bounce off the right post in the 59th minute.

Brandenburg played the final 45 minutes for FMU and recorded two saves.  Sophomore Casey Durham played the first half was not forced to make any stops.

Sophomores Laura Serafino and Whitney Nave each played one half for The Citadel, and made three saves apiece.
