Kady finds hole in Blue Hose at first-half horn

FLORENCE, SC - Freshman forward Kelly Kady scored on a 15-yard shot as the first-half horn sounded to give Francis Marion University a 1-0 win over Presbyterian College, Sunday afternoon (Sept. 13) in non-conference women's soccer action.

The win was the first of the year for the Patriots (1-6-0) and the first career victory for first-year head coach Joel Person.  Presbyterian falls to 2-4-0.

With the final 10 seconds of the first half being counted down, senior Jennifer Dyer served the ball from the right side to Kady at the top of the box.  Her shot then crossed the goal line just as the horn sounded to end the stanza.  For Kady, who was playing in only her sixth career match, it was her first score.

The Blue Hose tried to duplicate the feat at the end of regulation.  Tricia Bryan launched a 17-yard shot that FMU sophomore goalkeeper Casey Durham pushed over the crossbar with one second left in the match.

Presbyterian outshot Francis Marion 13-10 and led 5-3 in corner kicks.  Durham finished with four saves en route to her second career shutout.  Presbyterian's Sara Beth Anderson registered three saves over the final 45 minutes.  Abby Young played the opening half, but did not make a save.

Kady's goal was the Patriots' only shot-on-goal in the opening half.   Presbyterian's Emily Davis had an open shot from 19 yards out in the 16th minute that was cleared by an FMU defender just as the ball neared the open net.

Presbyterian nearly tied the score in the 55th minute when Kate Baker found herself unmarked 16 yards from the goal, but her shot sailed high and just over the crossbar.  In the 60th minute, Bryan went at Durham inside the box, but her attempt went just to the right of the near post.

Anderson snuffed out FMU's best scoring opportunity of the second half (62nd minute) when she charged out and blocked a shot by Kiley Williams near the top of the 18-yard box.

Francis Marion will play host to UNC Wilmington on Friday at 4 p.m.
