Late goal by Blue Hose downs FMU 1-0
CLINTON, S.C. – Freshman Rebecca Miller’s right-footed strike in the 79th minute gave Presbyterian College a 1-0 non-conference win over Francis Marion University, Friday night (Sept. 24) at Martin Stadium in women’s soccer action.
The Blue Hose improve to 3-6-1 overall, while Francis Marion falls to 2-9-1. The Patriots return home to host Charlotte (6-3-1) on Sunday at 4 p.m. on Florence Soccer Association Girls’ Day.
The teams were level at the halftime intermission with FMU taking an 8-4 advantage in shots over the opening 45 minutes.
In the 56th minute, Francis Marion’s Megan Ogiltree conjured up a shot from inside the box which was stopped by the post.
In the fateful minute, Miler took a feed from Sara Simpson and ripped a shot from just inside the 18-yard box which found the back of the net.
Francis Marion had four potential match-tying shots over the final 10 minutes, including three (two on frame) in the final two minutes, but was unable to produce the equalizer.
Blue Hose goalkeeper Sarah Beth Anderson earned her second consecutive shutout and her third of the season, while making seven saves. FMU junior goalkeeper Casey Durham made five stops.
Francis Marion outshot the Blue Hose 18-10, while PC led in corner kicks 4-3. Junior Kiley Williams led FMU with five shots, two of which were on goal.
“We played very well tonight and I am very encouraged by our progress,” said FMU head coach Joel Person. “We had 18 shots and created some really good scoring opportunities. We are still very young as a team and the future looks very good!”
