Pirates and lightning scuttle Patriots 4-1
GREENVILLE, NC – Despite a first-half goal by freshman Michelle Brown that tied the match at 1-1, Francis Marion University dropped a 4-1 decision to East Carolina University in a weather-shortened women’s soccer match, Sunday afternoon (Aug. 22).
The Patriots fall to 0-2-0 on the young season and will conclude their season-opening, three-match road swing in the Tar Heel state with a 7 p.m. contest on Wednesday at UNC Wilmington.
Sunday’s match was delayed in the 79th minute due to a lightning strike and then called later after another strike.
ECU (1-1-0) got on the scoreboard in the 20th minute when Amanda Malkiewicz scored on a penalty kick.
Brown knotted the score at the 20:43 mark when she headed in a free kick by senior back Rebecca Nelson. Brown led the Patriots with three shots.
The Pirates scored twice in a span of 1:59 late in the first half to claim a 3-1 advantage at halftime. ECU’s Bailey Wilcox scored on a header at 67:48 to account for the final tally of the match.
East Carolina outshot Francis Marion 21-8, although the Patriots led 6-3 in corner kicks. FMU junior goalkeeper Casey Durham recorded nine saves, while ECU’s Christiane Cordero registered for saves.
