Highlanders surge past Francis Marion in second half
FLORENCE, SC – Freshmen Rachel Conway and Krissia Vasquez each scored second-half goals to lead Radford University to a 2-0 non-conference win over Francis Marion University, Friday afternoon (Aug. 27) in women's college soccer action.
The loss spoiled the home opener for the young Patriot squad, which drops to 0-4-0. Francis Marion will play host to Wofford College on Sunday at 4 p.m.
Radford improves to 2-0-0 with its second consecutive shutout.
After a scoreless first half, Conway scored on a penalty kick only 1:33 into the second stanza. FMU had an opportunity to tie the score, but junior forward Kiley Williams was just high on a free kick from the top of the 18-yard box in the 53rd minute.
Vasquez then doubled the margin in the 58th minute when she took a feed from Mary Wiley and scored on a 15-yard shot that went to the left of Patriot goalkeeper Lauren Vetock.
Again Williams was in the middle of a Patriot scoring threat in the 68th minute. Following a Radford foul to the left of the box, Williams’ free kick landed within two yards of the goal line among a handful of players only to have a Highlander defender eventually clear the ball out.
Radford led 10-8 in shots, while the Patriots held an 8-2 advantage in corner kicks. Vetock, making her first start as a Patriot, registered five saves, while Radford freshman Che’ Brown recorded three stops.
Williams led FMU with two shots. The Patriots’ starting line-up included six freshmen.
