FMU netters named to PBC All-Academic Teams
Four Francis Marion University tennis players were recently honored for their work in the classroom. Junior Jitka Gavdunova and sophomore Mona Blauen were named to the Peach Belt Conference Women’s Tennis All-Academic squad, while sophomore Kerry Hall earned honorable mention recognition. Senior Karl Rogers was selected to the Men’s Tennis All-Academic squad.
Gavdunova is majoring in marketing and owns a 3.51 grade point average. Blauen has a 3.63 GPA as a management major, while Hall has a 3.81 GPA as a management major.
Rogers received a B.B.A. degree in finance at FMU’s commencement exercises earlier this month. He had compiled a 3.36 grade point average.
Gavdunova was 15-1 in singles play at the No. 1 position and ranked 13th nationally among NCAA Division II players. Her lone loss was to the then No.1-ranked singles player in Division II. She and Blauen posted a 12-4 doubles record and ranked 12th nationally.
A native of Vejprty, Czech Republic, Gavdunova is a two-time All-Conference selection and owns a 53-6 career singles record.
Blauen, a native of Cologne, Germany, compiled a 13-2 singles mark at the No. 2 spot, and is ranked 43rd nationally. She was 10-2 against PBC competition and earned All-Conference recognition.
Hall, a native of Westville, Natal, South Africa, was 10-6 in singles play and 12-6 in doubles.
The three helped the Patriot women to an 11-7 record and a Top 30 national ranking.
Rogers, of Killiney, Ireland, was 5-10 in singles play and ranked 13th nationally in doubles with a 10-8 record while gaining All-PBC honors. FMU posted a 10-8 record and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the fourth straight season.
The teams are part of a season-long program recognizing the outstanding accomplishments of PBC student-athletes in the classroom as well as on the field. To be eligible for the All-Academic team, a student-athlete must participate in at least half of his/her team’s events and be either a starter or significant contributor, achieve a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale), and have completed at least one full academic year at his/her current institution.
Founded in 1991, the Peach Belt consists of 13 member institutions in North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida and Alabama. In its short history, the conference boasts 26 NCAA Division II national championships.
