Patriots sweep tri-match on volleyball court

FLORENCE, SC – Francis Marion University received double-digit kill outings from three different players as the Patriots won a pair of volleyball matches on Saturday afternoon (Sept. 18) in the Smith University Center.  FMU swept Peach Belt Conference opponent Augusta State University in three games (25-13, 25-23, 25-22) and then returned to the court several hours later to dispatch Belmont Abbey College in four games (18-25, 25-21, 25-20, 25-21).

Francis Marion improves to 9-3 overall and 1-1 in the Peach Belt.  The Patriots will play at Wingate University on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

In the opening sweep of the Jaguars, freshman Paige Perreault registered 10 kills and freshman Riley Forester added nine kills and 13 digs.  Freshman setter Nicole Bennett handed out 31 assists and served six aces, while senior libero Kelsie Deaton compiled 16 digs.

FMU hit .378 in the set-two win with 17 kills and only three attack errors. The Patriots rallied from a 23-21 deficit in the set to win 25-23, ending on a Perreault service ace.

 

Karolina Stenlund and Jessica Hanson paced ASU with eight kills apiece, while setter Lisa Bartsch compiled 27 assists.  Both Andria Tagarelli and Chase Lowther had 17 digs.

In the four-set victory over the Crusaders, senior Mallory Eggert and Forester each recorded 13 kills, with Eggert also hitting .391 and adding five blocks.  Forester also served three aces and dug up a career-high 26 balls.  Bennett dished out 41 assists, while junior Hallie Legg manned the libero position and tallied a career-high 25 digs.

Lydia Schellenberg led Belmont Abbey with 13 kills and 16 digs, while Kay Schellenberg handed out 31 assists.
